Hydroplaning is scary and because of that we want to avoid as much as possible. Below are some tips on how to avoid hydroplaning:

  • Don't use cruise control when it's raining. Cruise control is convenient for highway driving, but it's important to be in control of your speed when it's raining or you may hydroplane.
  • Make sure your tires are in good condition and have an adequate amount of tread. Too little tread makes it hard for tires to grip the road and proper grip is essential when driving in the rain.
  • Make sure you rotate you tires on a routine basis to even tread wear.
  • Replace your tires when needed. Don't wait until they are completely bald. Driving on tires that are too worn or damaged puts you and your family at risk.
  • Avoid driving through standing water and puddles. Water that accumulated increases your chances of hydroplaning.
  • Don't drive too fast. Driving at a high speed makes it harder for your tires to push away water.
  • Keep an eye on the cars in front of you. You can tell how much water is coming from their tires which is a good indicator of how much water is on the road ahead.
